My Australian experience: the Sunshine Coast
Feeling smug having left the cyclone in Airlie behind, we made it after a very long, overnight, 13hour train journey, full of mostly watching kangaroos looking stunned like Meerkats, and attempting to get some sleep (NEXT TIME WE ARE GETTING SLEEPER CABIN) Despite the sun disappointing us and hiding, I still am yet to see a temperature below 17 degrees (and that was half 5 AM!).
Even though there was a cyclone up north, people were still surfing the mahoosive waves, unbeknown to us, these were probably professionals and so we thought we'd get out there and LEARN how to surf! Not our best decision! We failed and came straight back to switch surf boards for body boards (people staring at us thinking those two don't have a clue!) An equally bad decision for my stomach- grazed to shreds as the board was like sandpaper! But it was very fun nonetheless and the sun even came out to play for a bit!
Another good thing about our visit to Maloolaba, was that we got to see our friend who had moved to Oz in year 10 (ages ago), and only lived 5 minutes away from where we were staying- what a small world we live in! Her lovely family cooked a barbie in true AUSSIE style, and after a few tight budget days of practically starving, it was literally the nicest thing we had ever tasted! Scrummy burgers stuffed full of cheese, side of the nicest potato salad, Doritos, chunky steak, followed by delicious ice cream, raspberries, peaches and meringues (I'm only describing this in an M&S like manner because I want to re-live the moment every time I read this!) IT WAS SO GOOD. Also sleeping in an actual bed in an actual house was a dream! And the next day was bright sunshine! It just got better and better! Therefore, that day was spent soaking up the rays (oooh tough life) followed by drinks on the town and witnessing some very rowdy Aussies! EXCITEMENT.
The morning after the night on the town, the sun was shining and we took a road trip to Noosa. With high expectations, I was certainly not disappointed. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. Clear blue skies, crystal like ocean, white sands stretching far, and with a back drop of peculiar shaped trees (most seen that way in Oz) to which I was looking high and low to spot a wild Koala, however I did not. It was just pure beauty, the sea was warm, and to top it all off I had THE biggest and the best ice cream that I have had in Australia so far (and they sure do good ice creams)- Malteaser one, divine!!! No wonder it has been voted the worlds 2nd best beach!
And then... the 1 hour road trip commenced- Brisbane bound!
So, all in all, the Sunshine Coast has served us well: the sun did eventually shine, we were very well looked after by our Aussiefied English friend and we found out that Australia DOES do Pimms!
