My Australian experience : revisiting Airlie beach and the Whitsundays
Well aren't I a lucky girl! After a day full of gorgeous salads (yes an actual proper meal), sunshine , failing to beat H at spit (card game, not competitive AT all) and a tub full of ice-cream we left Townsville and headed for Airlie beach. Still having seen zero old buildings: everything is so modern, everyone is so friendly and everywhere has beautiful weather! Apart from mishearing a guy on the platform, thinking he said "alright bitch" and giving him a 'piss off' face, when actually he said "Airlie beach?", a friendly question, we arrived without any bother! And so excited for it all! The first night was tame...a huge ass meal, free bevvie, spot of TOAD RACING (no that's not a typo!) and then bed, ready for the rest of it!
Day 2, and a day full of chillaxing, money saving, and prepping for our big night out. We hit happy hour at every pub (experts at this game!) and it was all going well, until two friendly Aussies joined us...friendly at first, creepy, clingy, protective weirdos by the end! Apart from buying us all our drinks (shouldn't really complain, love being female!) they just clang and we ended up running away! Such a feel-good feel to Airlie, both day and night. I mean at one point an American woman, Peggy, and I mean like proper hillbilly type, the hat, the accent, came into our lives. One minute we were chatting at the bar, the next we were with a busker in the street, dancing around him and earning him big bucks (actually we should probably claim promotion rights!). All in all Airlie is just a good time!
Airlie beach is also where we had booked our boat trip. In mind, we had a beautiful clear, hot and very sunny weekend, full of glistening waters, beautiful views to enjoy whilst sunbathing, and Whithaven beach! But in reality... WELL... In order to get to the Marina we had to wait for a break in the torrential downpour. As soon as we hit off, it started again. The waves were huge, the boat was rocking (I was determined it was going to capsize), and sadly we had to skip the Whithaven treat as we would have literally died, however, it was a great experience and the people made it. We held on for our lives and occasionally jumped off and snorkeled by day ( can't really go wrong there, what with being right by the Great Barrier Reef and that), and the eating and drinking commenced after dark! THE FOOD WAS SO GOOD. In fact one night I ate 6 pieces of garlic bread with my spag Bol, not because I was hungry, simply because it was free and just SO GOOD. But what happens on Habibi, stays on Habibi, so I shall keep this brief! All in all the trip will remain one of my highlights, stay with me forever and the people I met were wicked! From all over the world. Bonus that we have got even MORE free beer and free pizza at the after party to look forward to tonight! Next stop tomorrow- Sunshine Coast!!
